What to understand more about what the NIHR funding does? Listen to Professor Peter Hutchinson, Director of Brain Injury HRC, Dr Virginia Newcombe, Acute Care and Monitoring Theme Lead, and James Piercy, PPIE Lead, talk about how the funding through the Brain Injury HRC has impacted research.
Professor Peter Hutchinson: (0:04)
Our research into traumatic brain injury includes BRC-funded translational studies to increase our understanding of pathophysiology, clinical trials to improve treatment, new technologies by the MedTech Cooperative and the HealthTech Research Centre, and a comprehensive global health research programme. Our impact includes clinical guidelines and practice, improving outcome, for example removing the skull bone flap to control brain swelling and replacing it later with a titanium plate to save lives and improve outcome for patients. Impact on international UK policy, the economy and public understanding.
Dr Virginia Newbombe (0:45)
The HRC helps both academics and industry work together with grant applications, pump priming and projects in order to help improve lives after traumatic brain injury. It’s leveraged more than 14 million for academic institutions and 72 SMEs.
James Piercy (1:03)
I was treated in Cambridge for a traumatic brain injury that I suffered in a car accident. The impact on me is that I’m now leading patient involvement and engagement for the HealthTech Research Centre which is based there.
Professor Tony Fugazi (1:15)
My name is Tony Fugazi, I’m a Professor of Paediatric Neurosurgery at the University of Cape Town and co-lead of the grant. We have a programme of understanding, mapping and implementing innovations in low and middle income countries where the need is greatest.
We have a global network of researchers in 12 countries and we started the first global TBI registry. We have a particular interest in the paediatric injured brain and we have social advocacy campaigns to prevent TBI in children, including a recent campaign to get child car seats to people in greatest need.
